HOW TO MAKE AHEAD

Jello shots are a great party treat to make ahead of time. They last for up to 3 days in the refrigerator. Cover them and only decorate them right before serving.

Jello Shot Recipe Tips

Follow these tips to make the best candy corn jello shots.

  • Tip: Do not add too much additional alcohol. While jello shots don’t taste overly boozy, they still pack a punch. Moreover, adding too much vodka might keep them from setting properly.
  • Tip: Store in the fridge until ready to use. Otherwise the jello might become liquid again.
  • Tip: Add decorations right before serving. Candy, whipped cream or fruit decorations might react with the jello and become slimy and unappetizing.

How To Store

Refrigerate: Store jello shots covered and undecorated in the fridge until ready to use. They will last for up to 3 days in the refrigerator.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

For perfect results every time, here are answers to the most common questions about making halloween jello shots.

Can too much alcohol keep my jello shots from setting?

Unfortunately that can happen if you add too much extra alcohol. Put your faith in us on this one! We have tried and tested different amounts of alcohol with this recipe and have found 1 cup of vanilla vodka to be the perfect amount. Even though jello shots don’t taste overly strong, they still pack a punch.

How do I make filling jello shot cups less messy?

We love using a glass measuring cup with a spout to fill the shot glasses, but you can use any bowl or container with a spout. We additionally recommend setting the shot glasses on a tray before filling them. This way you don’t have to move individual filled cups and risk spilling on the way to the fridge.

Equipment

  • saucepan
  • whisk
  • shot glasses or disposable condiment cups with lids

Ingredients

  • 3 oz box of yellow jello (pineapple or lemon)
  • 3 oz box of orange jello (orange or peach)
  • 3 cups boiling water divided
  • 1 cup vanilla vodka
  • 1 cup cold water
  • 2 (.25 oz) packets of clear gelatin
  • 14 oz can of sweetened condensed milk

Optional Decoration:

  • candy corn

Instructions

  • Whisk together one cup of boiling water and the yellow jello packet until jello is fully dissolved.
adding hot water to yellow jello
  • Add ½ cup of vanilla vodka and ½ cup cold water to the jello mixture.
    adding vodka to yellow jello
  • Pour the yellow jello to fill the bottom ⅓ of shot glasses. Recipe will make about 30 jello shots.
yellow jello layer in shot glasses
  • Place the shot glasses on a sheet pan for easy transfer to and from the refrigerator. Chill jello shots in the refrigerator for about 1 hour, until set.
  • Mix together the orange layer exactly as you've mixed the yellow layer – combine boiling water and orange jello until dissolved. Add vodka and cold water.
adding vodka to orange jello mixture
  • This time, however, be sure the orange jello liquid is room temperature (not warm) before pouring over the yellow layer. Fill each shot glass with orange jello until ⅔ full. Chill for another hour.
yellow and orange jello layers in shot glasses
  • To make the white layer, add 1 cup of boiling water into a bowl and sprinkle both packets of clear gelatin over the water. Whisk well, until gelatin is fully dissolved. Add can of sweetened condensed milk and allow mixture to cool to room temperature. (We did not add vodka to this layer, though you can if you want.)
white layer mixture in a bowl
  • Pour the white jello mixture to top of the orange layer to finish the shots.
adding the white jello layer to the shot glasses
  • Chill for 1-2 hours more in the refrigerator until the jello shots are set. Top with a candy corn right before serving.

Notes

  • The orange and white jello layers need to cool to room temp before pouring over previous set jello layers. The warmth can melt the jello and the colors will combine instead of layering. The first layer (yellow) does not need to cool and can be poured warm.
  • Using ½ cup vodka and ½ cup cold water in each of the colored layers provided a nice balance of alcohol and flavor. You can add up to 1 cup of vodka – you need 2 cups of liquid total, including the 1 cup of boiling water.
  • We liked the vanilla vodka in these jello shots to add a hint of that vanilla flavor that comes through in candy corns.
  • You can garnish with whipped cream, candy corns, or even festive sprinkles. Place garnish on top of the jello shots immediately before serving or they will melt/seep into the jello.
