Garlic knots are traditionally found in pizzerias in the United States. They were developed in the 1940’s as a way to use pizza dough scraps. What started as a way to use the scraps has turned into one of my favorite things!! Garlic knots are usually pizza dough, tied in an overhand knot and topped with spices and lots of butter. The more butter, the better. Dunk them in this marinara sauce recipe and you have heaven. Why You Should Let Your Dough Rise: Store bought or homemade pizza dough is made with yeast. The kneaded dough has to have some rise time. If you bought your dough it has probably already had one rise time. Allowing another rise before baking garlic knots will help the yeast ferment the sugar and the dough to become more elastic. Rising will improve the flavor and texture of the knots. The oven is the ideal place for putting your garlic knots while the dough is rising. For an electric oven or a gas oven with the electronic ignition, heat the oven at the lowest setting for one or two minutes, then turn it off. It will retain enough heat to help the dough rise. Ingredients: Ingredient amounts are in the recipe card below. pizza dough: Buy your favorite pizza dough from the grocery store (have you tried the dough from Trader Joe’s?) or make your own (this is our favorite easy recipe). seasoned garlic butter: Use salted butter, fresh garlic, Italian seasoning, and dried parsley to make a delicious seasoned butter. A little salt is optional.cheese: We prefer to use parmesan cheese, freshly grated.olive oil: Olive oil is used to grease your hands to prevent the dough from sticking to them. Possible Variations Add more cheese on top: Add some shredded mozzarella to the top of the garlic knots before you cook. Dip in marinara: These can feel like a meal if you dip them in warmed marinara sauce. Use this homemade marinara as bread dip for best results. Stuff with cheese: Before baking, carefully stuff with mozzarella cheese. How to Make Pizza Dough Garlic Knots: This is an easy garlic knots recipe to have the kids make! It’s difficult to mess these up. Full ingredient amounts and instructions are in the recipe card below. In the recipe card you can turn on “cook mode” or print, if you wish. Step 1: Preheat the oven to 150°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper. Gather your pizza dough, garlic and all your spices. Measure and chop your spices. Step 2: We love recipes with pizza dough. It’s easy to work with. Shape the dough into a log shape. Divide the loaf into four sections with a knife or scissors. Cut each section into four more pieces for a total of 16 evenly sized pieces. Step 3: Use olive oil to grease your fingers and roll each piece of dough into a 6-inch rope or strip. Tie the rope into a knot. Step 4: Place knots on the prepared baking sheets, spaced 2 inches apart. Repeat for the remaining pieces of dough. Step 5: Cover the baking sheets with a lightweight towel. TURN OFF the oven and place the baking sheets in the warm oven. Allow the knots to rise for 30 minutes to 1 hour. Knots will be puffy and doubled in size. Step 6: After the knots have risen, remove baking sheets from the oven and preheat it to 400°F. Step 7: In a small bowl, whisk together melted butter, minced garlic, Italian seasoning, parsley, and parmesan cheese. Add a pinch of oregano if you like. Step 8: Brush butter mixture over each knot. Reserve 1/2 of the butter mixture to brush on the knots after they’ve finished baking. Step 9: Bake knots for 18-20 minutes until they’re golden brown and cooked through. Step 10: Brush reserved butter mixture over the hot bread knots and serve easy garlic knots immediately. WHAT TO SERVE WITH GARLIC KNOTS Looking for meal ideas? We’ve got you covered!
